Abstract

This study sought first to identify the role of school administration in developing creativity in government schools in the governorates of Palestine (Nablus, Tulkarm, Qalqilya, Jenin, Tubas, Salfit). Secondly, the study endeavored to identify the role of the school administration in developing creativity, as perceived by school principals, which may be attributed to variables of sex, academic qualification, years of experience, undergraduate specialization and place of work. To these two ends, a 39-item questionnaire was developed and administered to a sample of 215 male and female principals or 50% of the total population targeted in this study. However, 196 of the subjects completed the questionnaire. The questionnaire also included two open- ended questions to identify the role of school administration in developing creativity in these schools and theoretical literature on school administration and creativity.

After data collection and analysis, it was found that the teacher domain, in developing creativity, was very high (86.7%). It was also found that the school administration, local community and school environment domains were high: 75%, 70.4% and 70.4% respectively. However, the educational curricula domain in developing creativity was average: 68.1%. The total score of the school administration in developing creativity in government schools in northern governorates and its obstacles, as perceived by principals of both sexes was 76.4%, a significant percentage of agreement. Moreover, it was found that there were no statistically significant differences at α = 0.05 in the role of school administration in development creativity in government schools which might be attributed to variables of academic qualification, years of experience, principals' specialization and place of work. However, there was a difference which might be attributed to the sex variable. After discussion of the results, the researcher suggested the following recommendations: developing school curricula and introduction of creativity- building skills, and providing physical and moral incentives in the schools environment.
